What's the future of Reid Library?
Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera deserves praise for his appearance at the public library board meeting of May 20, advising that Reid Memorial Library would be "saved." The mayor has been the target of much criticism by the public and the newspaper.
The attention should have been focused a little more on the library board and whether they were attempting to do anything to raise the library's attendance, including attracting the large immigrant population of that neighborhood with programs geared toward their culture and daily activities.
Also, the library's hours need to be extended (if possible) for those parents to partake in any programs that could be cultivated after 5 p.m., or on the weekends since most of that community is a working community.
If the library is to have a future, changes should be made geared toward the neighborhood it serves.
