Library plan adopted despite objections
PASSAIC-- The Passaic Library Board of Trustees adopted its strategic plan Tuesday night on a 3-2 vote, with Board President Craig Miller and board member Alex Blanco both absent. The strategic plan is a blueprint that covers library funding and financial management, collection development, facilities planning and maintenance staff training and board development. The strategic plan was begun after a 2004 State Library report, which recommended the Passaic Library reevaluate its services to better meet the needs of the city's rapidly changing demographics.
Although copies of the 40-page plan were passed out before the vote, there was no presentation of the strategic plan's key points. Several residents voiced concern that the board was approving the plan without the board president present, and despite having met only twice last year with no public hearing of the document.
They said the board should have given the public more time to review the plan and offer comment.
The Library Board will hold a meeting May 20 at Reid Memorial Library, 80 Third St., to give the public a chance to comment on a separate library board plan to close the Reid site.
